Management Team
Karen Ellis
Karen Ellis joined Tim Clowes at TL Clowes as her first job. She has made it her life’s work to maintain the momentum established by Tim Clowes in the motor sport world and to extend its reach to the benefit of other high-risk sectors. In 1996 she was part of the MBO of TL Clowes and followed this with the sale to THB in 2001. Having managed the current team for almost a decade, Karen believes the time now is right to take the next step and complete the succession planning surrounded by the exceptionally talented and experienced team trained for today’s marketplace. Her passion still remains to ensure the legacy of the Clowes brand continues for many years to come.
Tom Ellis
Tom Ellis has 20 years experience in the market and was instrumental in building the division’s war book following the Iraq conflict in 2003 to what is now a very significant part of the overall business. The business was initially weighted towards private security companies operating in post conflict environments but, in recent years, it has developed and diversified to include NGOs, life support and resource and servicing companies.
Tom has also become a well recognised face at global motor sport venues developing products and introducing them to the next generation of drivers, riders, teams and circuits along the same model as created during the Tim Clowes era.
James Martin
James started his career with the Clowes team in 1986. He has worked extensively on the motor sport insurance portfolio with specialist areas being the on-track, off-track and personal accident business. James also is a market leader in broking for rugby union and, having played at a high level in his youth, has a strong understanding of how to structure programmes. He, too, has experience in aviation, fine art, classic cars and marine cargo.
Tim Nagle
Tim has seven years experience in the insurance market and his expertise lies in sport accident and health, contingency, liability and marine. He is excited about entering this new era with Ellis Clowes and Company and is keen to continue to grow the global status of the company as a quality driven personal service in these niche areas. Tim is ambitious and shows business skills rarely found in someone so young. He is certainly one to watch as a leader in the City in years to come.
Richard Shardlow
Richard trained as a chartered accountant with PricewaterhouseCoopers, qualifying in 2002. Since then he has worked across a broad range of industries, gaining experience in finance and sales, most recently in the asset management division of Close Brothers. Richard joins a talented team at Ellis Clowes & Company Limited and will share its passion for the industry and clients.
Richard is responsible for the finance and operations functions of the company and looks forward to assisting in the growth and success of the business.
Nicola Lee
Nicola Lee has been with the Clowes Team in excess of 15 years and has worked closely with the current management for the majority of this time.
She has worked predominately within the accident and health division in the past and has progressed to Business Operations Director in recent years. Ellis Clowes prides itself on its service levels for the niche portfolio of business we deal with and therefore Nicola's role is integral to our company objectives.
Matthew Russell
Matthew Russell joined THB Clowes in 2005 as a Senior Liability Broker. Having over 20 years experience in insurance as a Liability Loss Adjuster, his experience in dealing with major and complex claims was crucial in his role of placing large and specialist liability risks into the Lloyds and London markets. He is able to add vital input into the placing and construction of policies knowing where the shortfalls in cover are and being able to ensure that the correct cover is provided for clients.
Matthew is now responsible for managing the Liability team at Ellis Clowes
Karen Woodley
